KOLKATA: The state government is planning to come up with a new branding to promote Bengal as a tourist destination. According to sources in the state secretariat, the tourism department is mulling the option of engaging professional consultants to come up with a new branding. The expression of interest may be floated soon to invite reputable consultants for this purpose.
The state government had earlier come up with ‘Beautiful Bengal’ — a short promotional film featuring brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan. The film showcased the state as an attractive tourism hub. However, sources said the branding did not create much of an impact.
The tourism department has already started tapping social media networks like Facebook to promote tourist spots in the state. The department is uploading prominent heritage spots, along with all details, for people to know about the state’s heritage past.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been giving much stress to develop tourism in the state. Only recently it was decided that an eco-tourism board will be constituted to promote eco-tourism across the state. The CM recently instructed forest department officials to work in tandem with the tourism department to set up eco-tourism spots. The tourism department is working on a number of eco-tourism projects in places like Jharkhali and Gajoldoba.
The tourism department is also preparing a detail project report for the proposed tourism circuit from Jangalmahal to Sagar Island. It will be placed before the union ministry of tourism for central funds. The authorities have also planned to come up with several more tourism circuits across the state.
Moreover, the state government has planned to introduce the West Bengal Tourism (development and regulation) Act, 2014, and a new incentive scheme for tourism. A preliminary draft has already been prepared and the final draft could be placed in the winter session of the assembly.
