Gangtok, 30 October
Three Sikkim Krantikari Morcha workers have been arrested for showing black flags to the Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling when the CM’s convoy was passing through Geyzing Bazaar today. More arrests are on the cards, said police. The Chief Minister was on his way to attend the golden jubilee function at Pelling Senior Secondary School in West Sikkim when the demonstration occurred. SKM has called the arrests ‘undemocratic’ and ‘illegal’, stating that protest and black flag stir without disturbing law and order is an integral part of participatory democracy.
According to Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, the protest was staged against the state government’s decision to sell a piece of land owned by Pelling Senior Secondary School for construction of a five-star hotel.
