Siliguri, 18 September: The eight-member Bandi Mukti Committee delegation met some of the family members of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) activists, who are now lodged in the correctional homes, in Kalimpong today. The delegation also met the Kalimpong municipality councillor and GJMM leader Mr Barun Bhujel, who, under arrest, was produced in court today.
“We are now collecting the lists of the arrested persons. We met some of their family members. We also talked to the Kalimpong municipality councillor and GJMM leader, Mr Barun Bhujel. We came to know that the arrest warrant was issued even against a cancer patient,” said the committee’s general secretary, Mr Choton Das. The members also met the Kalimpong MLA and senior GJMM leader, Mr Harka Bahadur Chhetri. “He briefed us about how the GJMM activists are being arrested. We are also trying to ascertain whether they have been accorded the status of political prisoners. The new West Bengal Correctional Services (Amendment) Act denies such a status to the political prisoners from the banned terrorist outfits or militant groups. But the GJMM not being a banned organisation, the arrested from the party are eligible for the status,” Mr Das added.
