Siliguri, 6 August
The Darjeeling MP, Mr Jaswant Singh, while addressing a press conference in Delhi today, said that carving Gorkhaland out of Bengal is an imperative in view of the security volatility in the region. “Apart from being an old demand, it is justified on the ground that the new state would act as a security bulwark in the strategically sensitive region,” he said.
However, he skirted the question whether the NDA if voted to power would consider the demand, saying that the BJP is in favour of smaller states. “We are happy,” said the GJMM leader, Mr Roshan Giri.
