Peace prevails in the Hills: Mamata

Sukna, 24 July – Chief Minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee said the situation in the Darjeeling Hills is and should remain, peaceful. When asked about the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) frontal organisations having raised questions over the success of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in addressing the developmental aspirations of the people of the Hills, she said, at Sukna Forest Bungalow today: “Peace has been prevailing in the Hills. Please let it be so. Do not create any confusion.” Observers said she has tactfully skirted the Telangana ferment spreading its wings again in the Darjeeling Hills. Rumblings are being heard daily particularly from the party affiliates that the GJMM should quit the GTA immediately to revert back to a full-blooded movement for Gorkhaland. The party’s delegation, led by senior leader Mr Roshan Giri, met the Union home minister and the defence minister in Delhi yesterday. They are believed to have told the Union ministers that they would be left with no other option but to quit the GTA in case the Centre carves out Telangana and remains indifferent towards the demand for Gorkhaland. “Miss Mamata Banerjee is aware of the ominous drift in the developing situation. But she has chosen to maintain silence. Hence, she has resorted to platitudes of peace,” said an observer.
Meanwhile, the Hill committee of the Darjeeling district Trinamul Congress met the All India Trinamul Congress general secretary Mr Mukul Roy and State Urban Development Minister Mr Firhad Hakim, in Siliguri today.
“We apprised them of the continuing GJMM tactics of intimidating the dissenters. They advised us to keep faith in the administration. The chief minister is likely to address a rally in the Hills between September and October. A delegation of the Hill committee will soon go to Kolkata to further deliberate on the Hills’ situation,” said the convener of the committee, Mr Rajen Mukhia.
