Alipurduar July 21: Six policemen and their driver died this morning when a speeding SUV carrying them for election duty to Malda rammed into a truck.
Of the eight persons in the car, only a village police is alive. He is critical and might be shifted to Calcutta by air. According to a police source, an assistant sub-inspector of police, two constables and four village police started for Malda early this morning from Cooch Behar in a Tata Sumo. Malda votes tomorrow.
Around 5am when the Sumo was in Brahmapur in Jalpaiguri, 95km from Cooch Behar and almost 300km from Malda, it lost control and collided with a truck loaded with rice coming from opposite side. Six of the policemen — ASI Amit Kumar Mongar, 31, Madan Chhetri, 46, Gopal Dey Sarkar, 42, Rejaul Karim, 25, Salim Islam, 26, and Partha Sarkar, 25, and driver Rashidul Hossain, 26, died on the spot.
Manirul Haq, a village policeman, is injured in the head and was taken to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
The truck driver escaped from the accident spot.
Kamal Roy, the owner of a tea stall in Brahmapur, said: “I was just opening the shop when I saw the Sumo crossing me at high speed and within few seconds I heard a loud sound. I rushed to the spot. The bodies were in such bad shape it was tough to pull them out. The road is in very good condition and there was no rain. We could not understand how the Sumo collided with the truck.” Amit P. Javalgi, the Jalpaiguri police superintendent, said: “The police personnel belong to Cooch Behar. The bodies have been brought to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.”
