Gangtok, 4 July
Around 16 Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party activists, now under trial at Namchi district prison in connection with the recent political clash at Melli, have commenced a hunger-strike inside the prison against the alleged poor quality of food being served to them. They said that their health is breaking down due to their partaking low quality food daily. They also expressed their annoyance over the use of offensive language and misbehaviour by the prison staff. The lack of proper health and hygiene in the prison has also been cited for defending their decision for the protest fasting. Among them, Sahadew Gurung has been admitted at Namchi district hospital after he fell sick, the party source said.
A team of SKM workers today visited their fasting comrades in the prison. They later informed about the hunger-strike. The SKM vice president, Mr Bhoj Raj Rai, said the political prisoners are being ill-treated at the behest of the Pawan Chamling government.
