Kurseong, 1 July- Four persons ~ three from the GJMM and one from the GNLF ~ were arrested today in connection with yesterday’s clash between the two parties at Kharay Khola, on National Highway-55. The arrested GJMM supporters were identified as Samir Gurung, Nikesh Chettri, and Nagesh Chettri ~ all three hailing from Singell tea plantation in Kurseong and one GNLF supporter was identified as Aashish Topno, resident of Longview tea plantation.
A senior Kurseong police officer confirmed the arrests, saying they were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Kurseong that sent them in 14-days judicial custody. The next hearing will be held on 15 July, it is learnt.
The officer also informed that both the parties had filed cases against each other.
The GJMM Kurseong sub-divisional president, Mr Tilak Gurung, had filed an FIR with the Kurseong PS against GNLF activist Mr Sangay Rumba and others. As per the GJMM complaint, the GJMM youth wing president Mr Premendra Gurung, had been attacked and injured by the GNLF activists.
Notably, the GNLF supporters were allegedly attacked by the GJMM activists at Kharay Khola while they were returning from Gorabari in Sonada, after the proposed indoor meeting was put off.
The three injured GNLF supporters are still undergoing medical treatment at the Kurseong sub-divisional hospital.
The injured GNLF activist, Mr Sangay Rumba had filed an FIR against a GTA Sabha member Mr Anosh Thapa, GJMM youth wing president Premendra Gurung and some others regarding the ‘murderous’ attack on them.
The GNLF Kurseong chief, Mr Nima Lama, had given a 48-hour ultimatum to the police, demanding all the persons involved in the attack be arrested,
including those listed in the FIR.
