Siliguri, May 27: Left Front councillors in the SMC confined civic commissioner P.D. Pradhan to his chamber this evening to protest the halt in disbursal of the local area development funds.
The gherao that began at 4.30pm was lifted at 10.20pm.
“Since March, we are not getting the funds. Every year as the academic sessions commence, many students who are economically backward are provided financial assistance…. Poor people are provided help for treatment and other purposes out of these funds,” said Nurul Islam, the CPM leader of Opposition in the SMC. “As the funds are not coming, we cannot help these people.”
Each councillor is entitled to nearly Rs 4.25 lakh as local area fund from the SMC.
The agitators were also protesting the hike in trade licence fees and property tax and the alleged mismanagement at the SMC. “We will not withdraw unless our demands are met,” said a councillor.
Earlier, Islam said the Left would not bring a no-trust motion against the Congress board as Trinamul would appoint an administrator. “The person would be a yes man and the civic body would run according to the whims of Trinamul,” he said.
