KOLKATA, 17 MAY: Softening the earlier stand of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM), Kalimpong MLA Mr Harka Bahadur Chettri today said the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland will be taken up afresh if the people of the Hills demand the same.
“The provisions of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) Act is yet to be implemented fully. It is only after the implementation of the Act that the drawbacks can be pointed out,” he said.
According to Mr Chettri, people of the Hills are the best judge and if they demand for a separate state then the issue will be taken up by the GJMM.
Accepting that differences had risen in the past over creation of a separate Gorkhaland, Mr Chettri said the situation has changed now. He blamed a section of the people with vested interests for creating tension between the GJMM and the state government.
Earlier this year, GTA chief executive Mr Bimal Gurung had threatened to resign from his post to continue the struggle for a separate state.
