Darjeeling-The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is all set to make its presence in the hills felt by holding a series of programmes here for the first time ever. The TMC announced a number of programmes at a meeting in Panighatta on Monday.
“We have come up with a few programmes to be held in different places of the hills starting with a protest rally in Kalimpong soon. The rally will be in protest against the delay in the arrests in case of the attack on Tshering Bhutia, one of our party leaders,” said Rajen Mukhia, TMC convener of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
On March 6, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters allegedly attacked TMC leaders, who were having an indoor meeting in Kalimpong, leaving Tshering Bhutia, who is the Kalimpong TMC convener, seriously injured. The police conducted a series of raids after the incident and arrested five people.
However, according to the TMC, the main people behind the attack were GJM youth wing leader Binay Ghisingh and GTA member Nima Tamang.
“Two persons were the main attackers and they have not been arrested yet. We demand that they be arrested immediately and the Morcha should not hide them,” said Mukhia. At Monday’s meeting, the TMC also decided to hold a public meeting soon to welcome the new people who have joined the party.
“We are also planning to hold a public meeting soon to welcome those who have recently joined our party. We want to do this in the presence of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee as more and more people are interested in joining us,” said Mukhia.
Among the other things discussed at Monday’s meeting included the issue of midday meal and appointment of teachers.
“Around 30,000 to 40,000 students are supposed to get midday meals. But the money being presently sent for the midday meal is for one-and-a-half lakh students. So, we want to know what is being done with the rest of the money. We want this case to come under vigilance scanner as a lot of corruption is involved,” said Mukhia. “Teachers were appointed last year. But the vacancies have been filled by party cadres. This should not be done,” he added.
“Most of the people from the Dooars have understood what the Morcha is and are now joining other parties. We request the people of the hills to see what the Morcha is and join other parties,” Mukhia further stated, adding that the people knew the leaders, who had become rich through the Gorkhaland agitation.
