Alipurduar-State working president of the Trinamool Youth Congress Sourav Chakraborty said that nearly five lakh supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) from the tea gardens of Dalmore, Tulsipara and Lankapara of Madarihat block have shifted their allegiance to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday. The only Congress panchayat member of Majherdabri gram panchayat of Alipurduar Block II also joined the TMC.
Chakraborty handed over TMC flags to the new members of the party at public meetings held in the three tea gardens of Madarihat Block on Thursday. He said: “Our party has become stronger in these areas after the new members have joined TMC. This strength will help us in the upcoming panchayat elections.”
Meanwhile, the joint secretary of the Dooars committee of the GJM, Ashok Kharen, claimed that no one from their party joined the TMC. “These are rumours spread by the ruling party to weaken the GJM. The ones who joined TMC on Thursday were from other political parties,” Kharen said.
Congress panchayat member Sukumar Sinha who joined the TMC was given the party flag by president of Alipurduar Town block TMC, Ashish Dutta.
